An Overview
As a whole, this four-session course has a steady progression of experience, feedback and understanding that is quite different from the way other forms of meditation are taught. After all, you’ll be learning a new skill, a new way of approaching your mind, understanding it, which takes time. Know that it’s time well spent.
If you’ve ever tried and given up before, you’ll begin to understand why you couldn’t meditate; that not all meditation techniques are effective or sustainable; and why you were never to blame for failing.
You’ll learn how to integrate meditation into your life; how your mind and body work together to affect your meditations; and how to think like a monk without entering the monkhood. Plus, you’ll hear rare behind-the-scenes stories of what it’s like to don the robes, change your name, and live out of a suitcase while traveling with monks from all over the world.
The Time
At first glance, four days seems like a rather long stretch to learn something as seemingly innocent as meditation, but you’ll find that the time just flies by. If the group is small, finishing early is possible.
The class used to be taught in one very full weekend beginning Friday night and taking up most of your Saturday and Sunday, but that was too much of a commitment for most people to set aside, and it was too much to absorb in such a compressed time frame. Now that it’s spread out one day per week, it makes it much easier to retain and receive feedback so you feel confident that it’s working for you.
What to Bring
Because meditation is often associated with yoga or a religious tradition, people often ask if they need to bring something special, like a yoga mat. Not here. You won’t need any special equipment for this course, such as a yoga mat or a stool or a drum. You’ll be sitting comfortably in a chair, but do bring some water.
If the course is not catered, or it’s not indicated we’ll be eating at local restaurants, then bring a light meal, one that won’t make you feel heavy and drowsy afterwards. The “Meditation & Chocolate Courses” are not really meals per se, although you could make an appetizer out of them.
