Okay, but will this work for me? It works for everyone, even those who have been dragged into attending by their well-meaning spouses (usually wives). But let’s look more closely:
- You’re confronting your boss
- Your heart is pumping and you have way too many thoughts that you’re not sure about what he’s going to say. However, as he speaks, you remember to mentally think the meditation techniques and your awareness shifts from the adrenaline rush of fear, uncertainty and doubt into a quieter, place of presence and stillness. You notice you’re still alert with him as you meditate with your eyes open. Your heart is still pumping, but your mind becomes clear. You’re able to respond clearly and to the point, which impresses your boss and you realize that there was nothing to be afraid of in the first place.
- You’re at match-point
- Remember that maxim about how sports is a mind game? Well, your head is chattery as you think about how important it is to win this point, that everyone is counting on you, that it all comes down to this moment. You feel your body tensing up and you know this can’t be good. You remember to use your meditation technique and the clarity of your mind comes back into focus. You can feel your shoulders instantly relax and time seems to not be slipping away so fast. You’re present with the ball and you’re back into your “zone”, as you notice a small smile returning.
- You’re ending a relationship
- With sadness, you break the news to your now ex-partner. However, you remember to mentally think the meditation techniques as you’re with them, and surprisingly for you, you notice yourself naturally coming from an altogether different space of loving compassion, rather than what you thought you’d say. There is wisdom, authenticity and presence behind your words, which makes it easier for both of you. This type of thing used to be much more difficult, but now it feels softer as the emotions come and go without becoming a burden. Even though you have thoughts about it later, it feels like it couldn’t have been done any other way.
- You’re driving in congested traffic
- Normally, this would get you irritated and fuming, and by the time you eventually arrived, you’d be tense and rushing to compensate. But you remembered to mentally think the technique as your car inched along the pavement and something shifted: you deeply relaxed; a different perspective emerged where you realized that “there’s nothing I can do so why fight it?”; and then you began to notice the lushness of the scenery and felt appreciative of that moment. Your appreciation began to overflow and grow to feel gratitude for being right there. You even remarked to yourself at how your road rage seemed silly in retrospect.
- You’re flying somewhere
- You hate flying! It’s crowded, delayed, with bad food, and your ears pop! But wait—you remember that you have all this free time to close your eyes and meditate right there in the airport lounge… in your airplane seat… while waiting for your baggage… that by the time your friends pick you up, they remark at how refreshed you look! In fact, as you check yourself, you do feel refreshed, and actually didn’t mind flying so much. Gee.
- You’re going home for the holidays
- How often have you dreaded how a certain someone in the family will bring up old wounds by reintroducing the same past stories? They just can’t let it go and it drives you nearly bonkers because you can’t not get involved too. This time, however, you try meditating with your eyes open as the grievance re-ignites. You notice that the still, quiet presence within is much more appealing than the juiciness of the pull to get involved and take sides. You actually begin to notice how comical it is and even laugh at it all, which is new for you. Pretty soon, everyone else’s tempers run their course and you can tell they’re not doing so well even though they pretend to be, but you feel solid and content in your own realm of peace.
- You’re going on a first date with someone you truly want to connect with
- You haven’t normally done so well on dates with someone like this because you realize afterward that you weren’t yourself the whole time. Rather, you were trying to be like someone else, someone “better”. Even though you’ve realized that before, you just couldn’t change your behavior during the date, and it ended badly. (You distinctly remember eating lots of ice cream afterwards to ease the pain.) However, on this new first date, since you’ve been meditating for awhile, you naturally feel more okay being “you”. In fact, you focus less on the thoughts about “you” and the subsequent feelings that arise, and more on the joyful presence that you wind up sharing. Maybe you find a lot in common, maybe you don’t, but you’re having fun either way. And surprisingly adult-like for you, either way winds up being okay.
- You’re overworked and stressed out again
- “There’s too much to do!” you think. “It can’t possibly be done all at once!” Your mind almost automatically begins to go into the “if I had only… if she had only… this never would’ve happened!” But then you remember to right-then-and-there use the meditation technique. The mind chatter drops off. Again the thoughts begin to storm, but again you gently, so gently continue. And back and forth it goes as the chatter loses its reality and you’re left a bit dumbfounded because it all seemed so real before. You notice that a part—no, a ginormous portion—of your stress was due more from the mental lather that you would whip yourself into rather from the actual work itself. In fact, you decided to just close your eyes right-then-and-there and meditate for 15 minutes to center yourself even further. Afterwards, you felt refreshed, and you even had some clever insights on what to do that you couldn’t have thought up had you not taken the chance to let the mind be still! Paradoxically it seems, by taking a quick meditation break, you even got more done.
